Letter: Give schoolchildren the protection they need

What are the chances of walking into an airport or getting on a plane since 911 with an assault rifle? Probably slim to none. I have been to two DuPage County hospital ERs this year and both had armed police officers at the door. Congress, governors, presidents and Hollywood celebrities are protected by armed security.

My question is, why are our schools not protected in the same way if our children are so important? They are touted as being the safest places on earth, but apparently are not. Lock the doors and an put an armed police officer inside. Some may complain that it costs too much or it is too traumatizing for children.

If we can send $40 billion dollars to Ukraine, we can spend $40 billion dollars to protect our children. I would submit it is far more traumatizing to be facing a gun and the possibility of being killed.

The resources for our defense should at least be equal to the resources of the aggressor.

Politicians can't seem to agree on gun control, but maybe they could agree to give our children in schools the same protection that they receive.
