Letter: Support candidate with solutions

Are you also disturbed by the May 19 mass shooting of grocery shoppers in Buffalo, NY? An AR-15- style rifle was used by an 18-year-old to kill ten people. What can we do about it?

One small step toward a complicated solution is electing officials who share our dismay and will work toward legislative solutions. Congressman Sean Casten (6th District) introduced the Gun Trafficker Detection Act to stop the flow of illegally trafficked guns into Illinois. He continues working for sensible gun safety as an active member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

When I first met Sean Casten at the March for Our Lives event sponsored by Downers Grove High School students in March 2018, he was running as a Democrat for Congress for the first time. As a parent of young girls in Downers Grove, he was passionately concerned that the U.S. gun culture is costing too many innocent lives. March for Our Lives was organized in response to the mass shooting at a Florida High School in which a 19-year-old shooter used an automatic rifle to shoot 17 dead.

Even though I was not in the 6th District then, I was so impressed with him that I started volunteering for Casten's 2018 election. Due to recent redistricting, I am pleased to be in the "new" District 6 and that Casten is representing me. Casten is advocating for universal background checks, ban on assault weapons, stopping the flow of illegally trafficked guns and holding gun owners responsible if their gun is used in a crime.

Use your dismay and act. Find out more about Sean Casten's positions at castenforcongress.com and join me in voting for Casten in the Democratic primary now.
