Here are some numbers worth adding to our previous statements about the Uvalde, Texas, killings: The FBI reports 61 "active shooter" incidents in the U.S. in 2021, the highest tally in more than 20 years, 52% higher than 2020 and roughly double each of the three previous years. The Uvalde massacre marks the 27th school shooting and 212th mass shooting so far in 2022.

Tyson's travels

Kudos to all who helped to "safely and humanely" capture Tyson, the 1,300-pound bison that had escaped and has been living in the Lakewood Forest Preserve near Wauconda. We enjoyed tracking Tyson's travels over the last several months, but she and forest preserve visitors are safer now that she's been returned to her owner.

Key word: 'inclusion'

Organizers of Aurora's June 12 Pride parade have excluded uniformed police who may wish to march in support of LGBTQ+ rights. That's an unfortunate decision at a time when communities need to see police standing up for oppressed populations. Marchers should welcome not just the protection police will provide but their support as well.

Hooray for the champs

The 2021 WNBA champion Chicago Sky celebrated with their fans again this week when they received their rings at Wintrust Arena. After the banner was raised, the Sky went out and did what they do best ... win another game. Congratulations on the hardware.

Keep an eye out for cyclists

Summer's here and that means more bikes on suburban streets and roads. If you're in a vehicle, be patient and keep an eye out for cyclists.

Good time for streaming services

Whether you're watching a network TV show, a ballgame, a game show, the local news, even late-night talk shows, you're getting hit with all variety of political ads. Is there no escape? Yes, there's Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and the like. Meanwhile, do remember the truth is often stretched or even elusive in those ads. Or use your mute button.

Busy summer; get boosted

We welcome the transition to summer this weekend, and if you saw our large Summer Fun section in Sunday's paper, you know that festivals, concerts and other summer events are back on track. But don't forget why we missed the plethora of events for two summers; COVID-19 is still with us. Do your part to keep the numbers low. Get boosted.

Continued fight against opioids

DuPage County once again has demonstrated its commitment to fighting the opioid epidemic by handing out roughly $110,000 in grants. Three local organizations - Gateway Foundation, Serenity House Counseling Services Inc., and 516 Light Foundation - will use the funding to help pay for substance abuse prevention and treatment programs. It's money well spent.
