Q&A

What personal background and experiences particularly qualify you for the role of secretary of state?

I have worked hand in hand with the Secretary of States office on many projects in my role as State Representative such as working on organ and tissue legislation, insurance legislation, and legislation regarding seniors and defensive driver training that recently passed into law.

How efficiently do you think the Secretary of State's office operates currently? What, if anything, would you do to streamline the office?

I would be an agent for change, starting with hands on leadership. Better technology, customer service, facility improvements and employee cross-training are just a few of my plans for streamlining services.

Are there enough branch offices in Chicago, the suburbs and downstate?

Yes, however making those offices more efficient by partnering with our 38 community college districts could benefit taxpayers.

How would you rate customer service at secretary of state branch offices? If it needs improvements, how would you make them?

There is always room for improvement. I have many goals for improving customer service, the most important being working directly with employees to better understand how we can make the offices run more smoothly.

Are you satisfied with the rate of organ donation? Is this an appropriate initiative for the secretary of state? Should the office do more to promote the practice?

Yes. Better education and promotion would increase numbers of donors. I have worked on legislation that has been adopted regarding 16 and 17 year old's to be allowed to enter the donor registry with a parental opt-out. My years of service as McLean County Coroner have given me extensive knowledge of organ and tissue.
