Winston Warriors receive warm welcome after state triumph

Winston Campus Junior High athletes returned to Palatine triumphant over the weekend after capturing honors as the second best team in the state during the Illinois Elementary School Association championships.

The Winston Warriors also brought home three state championship titles: Jaeden Gaspard, Sebastian Lopez, Norbert Zych, and Christian Gaspard (alternate: Cameron Bickel) won the 4x100-meter relay; Christian Gaspard took the 200-meter championship; and Alex Krieg took the 800-meter title.

While making their way home from the meet in East Peoria, the students were met at Route 53 and Palatine Road by a contingent from the Palatine police and fire departments, which escorted team members back to Winston Campus.

This is the first year that the Palatine Township Elementary District 15 school has participated in the IESA competition. It has proven a success, with the Warriors qualifying for state both in their fall and spring seasons.

The team's coaches include Alex Soto, Taylor Passarelli, Matt Gillingham, Polly Cheeseman, Susie Gronwick, and Maxine Weinman.
