Fly Pride flag to show support for inclusion

I support raising the Pride flag at the Arlington Heights Library and throughout the community in June, Pride month. Regarding a flag policy, the village, the library and the park district should permit the flying of the Pride flag and all other flags that are approved and flown at our state capital in Illinois.

Pride and LGBTQ rights are important to me. I have many people in my life who are gay or transgender. I value them as individuals and I appreciate their many academic, economic and cultural contributions to our community's lives, local businesses and civic institutions.

The library's values statement expresses support for diversity and inclusion. Our village has adopted a position that supports diversity, equity and inclusion, including gender identity and sexual orientation. Flying the Pride flag in June is an outward symbol of that support.

There is a 5,000 Pride Flag project in Arlington Heights; this initiative's goal is to blanket the community with 5,000 Pride flags to let our LGBTQ neighbors and friends know that ours is a community of good neighbors, fully inclusive and welcoming. Email friends@fumcah.com for information, or for a flag.
