RJM Strategy Group to host self-defense workshop June 5 with proceeds to benefit Naperville Area Humane Society

Adults ages 18 and up are encouraged to register for an upcoming self-defense workshop planned for Sunday, June 5, in Naperville, and hosted by RJM Strategy Group, a local leader in law enforcement, safety and security for business owners and residents.

"Real World Self-Defense" is intended to empower adults with self-defense knowledge and skills to protect themselves in domestic or street violence situations. It is especially designed for those with little to no self-defense knowledge or experience.

The training workshop will include 30 minutes of instruction on situational awareness and avoiding confrontations and assaults. The last 90 minutes will instruct participants on basic self-defense skills. Both male and female instructors will be on hand to assist participants. Attendees should come dressed for a light cardio workout.

The workshop will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. outdoors (weather permitting) on the North Central College campus, in the greenspace located between Merner Fieldhouse and the Res/Rec Center. In the event of inclement weather, the workshop will move indoors to the second-floor wrestling room located at Merner Fieldhouse, 450 S. Brainard St. in Naperville.

Instruction will be led by retired police officers, Ray McGury and Chuck May, who bring a combined 60 years of law enforcement experience. Additionally, May, a retired police officer, is a second-degree black belt with experience in self-defense and Krav Maga instruction.

"In our workshop, we emphasize the critical nature of situational awareness, help participants identify threats, and show them how to escape from threatening situations or physical attacks," explained May. "Our participants leave our workshops with enhanced confidence and skills they can use immediately, which is important given the rise in domestic violence and street crimes. Additionally, this training is essential for all current and incoming college students to understand how to protect themselves in a variety of situations."

Event check-in will begin at 10:45 a.m. A portion of the event's proceeds will benefit Naperville Area Humane Society.

The cost to attend is $40 or $30 for students. Payment will be taken on the day of the event via cash or check made payable to RJM Strategy Group. Pre-registration is requested; email ray@rjmstrategygroup.com or call (630) 360-1965 and provide your name and email address or phone number.

Attendees will be required to sign a waiver the day of the event prior to participating.
