Letter: Roberts should step down from court

Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, wrote " ... the [Roe v. Wade draft decision] would be completely inconsistent with what Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh said in their hearings."

Those hearings were under oath. There are likely other untruths in testimony by Kavanaugh and Thomas.

And now the leak. It could be from the right hoping to lock in a fraught opinion. Or it could be from the left hoping to change that opinion.

In any case, Roberts is the chief justice of a Supreme Court that has betrayed the trust of the American republic.

He could not stop it.

The first step in restoring trust in the Supreme Court is for the sitting chief to acknowledge his court's failure.

He should resign.
