Congresswoman has proven she listens
As someone who has been involved in the Stop Sterigenics movement for years, I've been focused on ending carcinogenic emissions and preserving our planet. When Sterigenics was emitting ethylene oxide (EtO) right here in Willowbrook, I saw many officials come to our rallies and press conferences, take photos with us and claim to support our work.
One congressperson believed us and genuinely supported our community: Marie Newman. Even as a candidate back in 2019, she pushed state lawmakers and agencies to do something about this known polluter. Knowing that sterilization facilities like Sterigenics create elevated cancer risk for communities like ours nationwide, Marie knew something had to be done - and she got to work.
In her first term in Congress, Marie introduced the Matt Haller EtO Awareness Act, named after a 45 year-old father who lost his battle with stomach cancer, one of the many cancers associated with EtO exposure. This legislation will require clear labeling of any foods or food additives treated with EtO - a significant and important change considering the U.S. EPA and FDA strictly regulate EtO and all of Europe and Australia outright ban EtO use on food.
Congresswoman Marie Newman heard our concerns and introduced legislation to increase consumer awareness of how toxic EtO enters our homes. It is shameful that Sean Casten, a congressman who showed up for photo ops in 2019, is taking a stand against informed consumer choice by opposing the Matt Haller EtO Awareness Act that would require EtO treated food to be labeled.
I plan to vote in the June 28 Democratic primary for someone who will listen to constituents, take immediate action and fight for our neighbors every day. I urge everyone to vote for Congresswoman Marie Newman in the Democratic congressional primary for the 6th District.
