Letter: Who will compensate Ukraine after the war?
Like all wars, the war in Ukraine will end one day. Hopefully it will be one day soon. When that day arrives a huge question that will be posed is: Who pays for all the destruction brought on the country of Ukraine?
After World War II, the United States (one of the winners) helped Germany, Japan and Italy (the losers) rebuild their ruined cities and industries. Now Russia, win, lose or stalemated in Ukraine, will most likely not lift a finger or donate a ruble to help Ukraine and its people.
So why won't the Russian government help its neighbor? One, Russia is a Third World country with nuclear weapons (think Pakistan.) Russia could at least help, but President Putin is too much of an egoist to assist a country that poked a finger in the eye of a Russian aggressor.
Two, the Russian government is a taker and not a giver. Look at Eastern Europe and the Baltic States in the decades after WW II. It wasn't until the U.S.S.R. fell apart did these countries get to keep what was really theirs.
Three, the Russian hierarchy is economically, morally and ethically bankrupt. Only an idiot would trust the word of a Russian official, diplomat or business professional.
So, back to the question of who compensates those Ukrainians who lost family members and friends in this war? Who pays Ukraine to rebuild the ravaged cities and infrastructure?
