Elgin Izaak Walton League to host 'Start In Your Yard' May 3

On Tuesday, May 3, the Elgin chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America will be hosting the local movement "Start In Your Yard" at 7 p.m. at the Hanover Township Izaak Walton Center located at 899 Jay St. in Elgin.

"Start in Your Yard" is a local movement by members of Wild Ones. Based on the concept in Doug Tallamy's book, "Nature's Best Hope, Start in Your Yard," it embraces the concept that it is up to each one of us to help to restore ecological function to degraded landscapes.

They understand that the region has become disconnected from the natural world, and our place in it, with disastrously consequences. Recognizing that the region is part of a great web, they are moved to become cooperative partners and share the land where we all live.

To begin, "Start in Your Yard" wants to replace some the of the endless lawn with native grasses, flowers, trees, and shrubs. They don't need to wait for governmental action. They want to remind you, that has homeowners, you are all empowered. You can step out today and begin making changes to provide respite for the biodiversity that is being displaced.

"Start in Your Yard" would like to expand upon these ideas and talk about what is taking place in the Elgin area.
