Aurora recycles 20 tons of electronics as part of Earth Day Week

Aurorans got an early start to celebrating Earth Day by making sure old electronics didn't end up in landfills.

More than 1,500 people participated this weekend in the city's free spring electronics recycling drive-through.

They were allowed to bring up to two televisions of any size and an unlimited amount of other approved electronics at no charge.

Registration was mandatory and limited to Aurora residents only. The event reached capacity within 24 hours.

Cars lined up in downtown Aurora with trunks and back seats filled with everything from televisions and computers to vacuums and blenders. The drive-thru model allowed residents to stay in their cars while employees from A-Town Recycling removed items for proper disposal.

More than 20 tons of electronics were collected, filling up three large semi-trailers.

Electronic products, which are banned from regular landfills by the state, become hazardous to the earth and public health if disposed of improperly.

Earth Day is celebrated this Friday, April 22, as a conclusion to Earth Week this week.
