Letter: he message for Russia
Since many only read headlines and I frequently am one, it appears Volodymyr Zelenskyy is sending a flawed message. Today, the headline says the Ukrainian leader is telling the world to act and punish Russia. It doesn't appear that Americans are interested in continuing to poke the Russian Bear and rightly wish to encourage peace in the region, not punishment.
We've all seen the atrocities, but also heard the Russian offensive is running out of steam. The acrimony between Ukraine and Russia looks like it will continue unabated for another 1,000 years as it has for centuries. It is not the responsibility of the world to side with Ukraine and stoke anger with the Russians. Depending on who you believe, the theory is that Russia does not want Ukraine to join NATO. Imagine how Putin and the Russian People will feel if NATO accepts Ukraine as Zelenskyy suggests? Divisive behavior with a nuclear power cannot be in the playbook.
NATO and the U.S. must make it clear to these warring factions that we are watching and encouraging peaceful resolution to their problems. I'm not suggesting we pardon Putin's genocide; in the, end he will be judged in Brussels and if not there, in history and by his maker.
