Man charged with attempted murder after Chicago cops injured

CHICAGO (AP) - A man faces attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting a Chicago police officer during an exchange of gunfire and injuring a second officer by pinning him between two vehicles, police said.

James Callion was wounded in Monday night's shootout with police during a traffic stop and hospitalized in serious to critical condition. He faces three counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery and other charges, the Chicago Police Department said Tuesday night.

Police said officers had stopped Callion, 28, after seeing him commit several traffic violations.

As they walked up to his car, Callion allegedly rammed his vehicle into one of the officers, pinning him against a squad car, police said. Callion then opened fire, striking one officer in the left pinky finger.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Tuesday that neither officers' injuries were life-threatening.

Police did not say who fired their gun first or which of the two officers shot Callion. Police also did not divulge the reason for the traffic stop.

The incident will be investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, or COPA, as is routine in officer-involved shootings.
