Act now on to avoid problem filing state taxes

Taxpayers wishing to file online using MyTax Illinois might need a little help to get started. As your paper has pointed out, a Letter ID is needed to create a new account.

On the MyTax Illinois homepage, ignore the login panel on the right and scroll down on the left to the panel for "Individuals." Click on the link "Request a Letter ID" and follow the instructions. When you get your Letter ID via USPS return to the homepage and click on "Sign Up" in the panel on the right. There is plenty of time, about three weeks, if you take action today to use the free filing option. With Letter ID you are protected against fraud.
