MWRD offering rain barrels to Cook County residents

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is offering a rain barrel program to Cook County residents.

Rain barrels connect to downspouts and collect water flowing from roofs. They help reduce the amount of stormwater runoff by storing rainwater for future use, prevent sewer overflows and flooding by keeping water out of the sewer system, and lower water bills by reusing rainwater instead of tap water for outdoor use.

Collected water can be used to water gardens or lawns, washing a car or cleaning tools.

Each order includes a rain barrel, leaf and mosquito filter screen, spigot/tap, overflow adaptor and hose, connecting elbow to attach the barrel to a downspout and free delivery to your home.

The cost is $21.96 for those eligible for a subsidy or $43.92 regular price.
