Elgin man gets 27 years in prison for sexually assaulting child

An Elgin man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Joel Rivera, 44, pleaded guilty in August. He was sentenced on March 16.

According to authorities, between August 2016 and August 2019, Rivera sexually assaulted a victim who was younger than 13. Rivera knew the victim.

He will have to serve at least 85% of the sentence before being eligible for parole and received credit for 2½ years spent in the Kane County jail since his arrest. He will have to register for life as a sex offender.
