St. Charles man pleads guilty to leaving crash that killed a pedestrian

A St. Charles man was sentenced to 90 days in jail Thursday after pleading guilty to leaving the scene of a crash that killed an elderly pedestrian in a wheelchair.

Andrew J. Jensen, 25, of the 100 block of South 13th Street, will also spend four years on probation and must perform 100 hours of community service as part of a plea agreement accepted by Kane County Judge John Barsanti.

Jensen pleaded guilty to felony leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury or death.

The Oct. 9, 2020, crash killed 88-year-old Helen Radnoti of Chicago.

Radnoti and her adult son were crossing Main Street at Third Street in downtown St. Charles around 4 p.m. Jensen, driving a pickup truck, was turning right from southbound Third to westbound Main when he hit Radnoti.

He did not stop after the crash. Jensen did surrender to police late that night.

When released from jail, Jensen will have to undergo an alcohol- and drug-use evaluation and comply with any treatment recommendations.

Jensen had been convicted, or pleaded guilty, to charges of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, in 2015, 2016 and 2018, according to Kane County court records and authorities.

In 2017, he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and was sentenced to court supervision.

Jensen had been free on $50,000 bond while awaiting trial.
