Rally in Geneva Sunday to show solidarity with Ukraine
Geneva resident Paula Merrington is proud of how Ukrainians are standing up to Russia's invasion of their country.
"The people of Ukraine are showing the world what courage and conviction looks like," she said. "We want them to know that the people of Geneva and the Fox Valley stand with them in spirit and in solidarity."
Merrington is helping organize a solidarity rally for Ukraine that will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in front of the Kane County Courthouse, 100 S. Third St. in downtown Geneva.
The rally will feature a few speakers, including Tanya Fedak, who is a Ukrainian American.
"We're offering anybody participating, if they would like to say a few words, they're welcome to," she said. "We'll also have some opportunities for people to donate to a few causes, the main one being the Ukrainian Medical Association of North America."
Merrington hopes the rally will give people a voice.
"I think a lot of people have a lot of strong feelings about what's going on and they feel a bit helpless," she said. "This gives people the opportunity to come together and hear a little bit from the perspective of Ukrainian Americans about what's going on."
A rally in support of Ukraine will also be held in Chicago on Sunday.
"So we decided to have a rally out here for folks who couldn't make it into the city but who would have liked to have been there," Merrington said.
