2 drivers seriously injured in Lake County crash

Two drivers sustained serious injuries in a head-on crash Wednesday evening near Mundelein.

Lake County Sheriff's Office investigators said the crash occurred at about 6:20 p.m. near the intersection of Route 83 and Winchester Road, on the northwestern outskirts of Mundelein.

Initial investigation indicates a BMW driven south on Route 83 by a 55-year-old Round Lake woman crossed the double-yellow lines into the northbound lanes and collided with a northbound Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 58-year-old Lake County man.

Both drivers were the lone occupants of their vehicles and both were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.

Authorities said the woman suffered life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the Silverado sustained "serious, but nonlife-threatening" injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
