Buffalo Grove applying for certification in flood insurance incentive program
Buffalo Grove has submitted documents required for recertification in the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Community Rating System.
Village Engineer Darren Monico told the village board Tuesday that last year, the village officially was entered into the community rating system, a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages floodplain management practices that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program.
"This gives the residents who are in the Special Flood Hazard Area a 15% reduction in their flood insurance," he said.
As part of the annual recertification process, he said, the village is required to present the information at a public board meeting.
More than 1,500 communities nationwide take part in the program.
