A Mount Prospect letter to the editor: Cartoon falsely depicted gun sales in the U.S.

I have to admit confusion regarding the Ed Wexler political cartoon published on Feb. 5 in your paper. It depicted a young boy trying to purchase a copy of "Maus" and being denied in the first panel, but in the second panel eagerly being offered a rifle by a gun dealer.

Apparently, Mr. Wexler hasn't heard that there are laws that prevent the sale of firearms or ammunition to anyone under the age of 18 by a licensed firearms dealer. I am not sure if Mr. Wexler is uninformed and unable or unwilling to do the research, trying to propagate the myth that guns are given away like candy in the U.S. or saying that even where a law is clearly spelled out it might not be followed by those intent on breaking it.

A newspaper like the Daily Herald should do research before printing a cartoon that might insinuate a false condition. This does nothing to further trust of the media's intent among the gun rights community.
