Three-car crash in Lake County leaves Wisconsin man critically injured

A Wisconsin man was critically injured in a three-car crash Saturday afternoon in Beach Park, Lake County authorities said Sunday.

A preliminary investigation by the Lake County sheriff's office indicates that the 42-year-old Fitchburg, Wisconsin, man was driving a 2010 Subaru crossover north on Sheridan Road approaching Yorkhouse Road at about 4:40 p.m. when he attempted to pass a 2006 Honda Civic driven by a 20-year-old Zion man.

The Subaru, which witnesses said was traveling at a high rate of speed, struck the Honda, propelling it off the road and into a tree, sheriff's police said.

The Subaru continued north for several hundred feet before leaving the road, hitting a utility pole and rolling into a northbound 2002 GMC Sierra driven by a 39-year-old Zion man, authorities said.

The driver of the Subaru was taken to Vista East Medical Center in critical condition, according to the sheriff's office.

The driver of the Honda and his front-seat passenger, a 21-year-old man of Zion, also were taken to Vista East with nonlife-threatening injuries. The driver of the GMC and his passenger, a 7-year-old boy, were uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation.
