Round Lake man accused of brandishing gun before fatal Bartlett crash

A Round Lake man faces charges alleging he displayed a gun in view of a passing driver just before the SUV in which he was riding was involved in a fatal crash with a third vehicle last April in Bartlett.

Eric Alcantara, 18, appeared in Cook County court Wednesday, when a judge released him on a $30,000 individual bond while he awaits trial on charges of aggravated unlawful use of weapon and aggravated assault. He's scheduled to return to court Feb. 18 in Rolling Meadows.

According to Bartlett police, Alcantara was a passenger in a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling south on Route 59 near Lake Street about 8:15 a.m. April 2 when he displayed a loaded handgun in view of a 42-year-old man driving a 2016 Chrysler 300.

The Trailblazer then hit and crossed the median before being struck by a 2012 Volkswagen Passat headed north, police said.

The impact caused both Alcantara and the driver of the Trailblazer, 19-year-old Milton Munoz Jr. of Round Lake, to be ejected from the SUV. Both were taken to Amita St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, where Munoz later died.

The 31-year-old man driving the Volkswagen Passat was taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield with injuries that were not life-threatening.
