A democratic republic
Dear Grace Ford, regarding your letter of Jan. 21. Please understand that a country like ours is both a democracy and a republic. In fact, we may term the United States a democratic republic. Democracy means that the power of governance rests with the people. However, in the USA, the exercise of that power is implemented through electoral representation, thus we are also a republic. So, I believe it is permissible for politicians to use both or either term when speaking about the United States government.
