Lombard village board to review proposed revised district map Feb. 3

The village of Lombard has begun the process of redistricting, a process of redrawing district boundary lines based on new census data, which must happen every 10 years in alignment with the U.S. Census.

As a district-based community, state law requires no two districts have more than a 10% deviation in population.

A dedicated redistricting webpage is now available with an overview of the redistricting process, proposed maps and frequently asked questions for public review and comment at www.villageoflombard.org/redistricting.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census results, the village's total population increased by 1,281 persons for a total population of 44,476 residents. Given the increase, the ideal district size is 7,413 residents. Since each district must meet the 10% threshold, no two districts may have a difference of more than 741 persons in total population.

"Redistricting is a critical, once in a decade opportunity, which helps ensure Lombard residents have fair and equal representation on the village board," said Village President Keith Giagnorio. "Our board looks forward to helping ensure an open and transparent public process, free from any political influence over how the maps will be drawn."

Village staff created several map options for the village board of trustees review and consideration.

At a Dec. 2, 2021 workshop, the village board reviewed the proposed maps and unanimously expressed support for the option which displaced the fewest number of residents and maintained boundaries that were most consistent with the current district boundaries.

The village board will review the proposed revised district map at the Feb. 3 board meeting. It is anticipated that the village board will take final action on a revised district map on Feb. 17.

Upon approval by the village board, the new district boundaries will go into effect.

Village residents who have questions or comments should email communications@villageoflombard.org or contact their current village trustee.
