Armed man shot by Fort Wayne police facing weapons charges

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A man who was shot and wounded by Fort Wayne police last week after officers called to a home found him armed with a gun is facing weapons and intimidation charges.

Thomas A. May, 36, was taken into custody Sunday when he was released from a hospital where he had been treated after being shot last Friday.

He faces four counts of pointing a loaded firearm and six counts of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. May also has been charged with two counts of intimidation and one count of neglect of a dependent.

He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries Friday night after being shot by Fort Wayne police at a home near Interstate 69 and Northrop High School.

Police were responding to a disturbance involving suicide threats when officers encountered May armed with a handgun, and at least one officer fired a gun, hitting him, police have said.

No officers or bystanders were reported injured.

Fort Wayne police and Indiana State Police will investigate the shooting, and the officers involved will be placed on standard administrative leave.
