No injuries in overnight house fire on Elgin's east side
No one was hurt after fire broke out overnight Thursday in a home on Elgin's east side, authorities said.
Elgin firefighters called to the 1300 block of Borden Drive just after midnight Thursday arrived to find a two-story home with fire burning through the roof and part of the second floor, fire department officials said.
Fire crews used hand lines to bring the fire under control within about 20 minutes of arriving.
The home was occupied, but the family evacuated after smelling smoke and being alerted by smoke detectors, authorities said.
The home suffered extensive damage to the attic and second floor and was declared uninhabitable. Early estimates put the damage in excess of $40,000.
Initial indications suggest that the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring, officials said. The fire remains under investigation.
