A military understanding of the value of vaccines

For those who were in the service in the "old days," remember standing in line to get vaccinated without the foggiest idea of what they were shooting into our arms?

All we knew, the intent was to keep us healthy and ready for any assignment or deployment that presented itself especially in times of a sudden conflict. Whatever the vaccine, we assumed it would keep us and those around us safe. Military life involved close living arrangements, (barracks) training, etc., which is not conducive to "social distancing." What's best for the team, the squad, etc. is the major concern, not singling out the individual.

I'm a little disappointed that a number of members of our armed forces are choosing to be discharged rather than receive the vaccine. But then again, would I want someone next to me that could infect me as well as those around me during a deployment? Nah! Maybe an understanding of the medical requirements before they join would help.

I spent 20 years-plus on active and reserve duty as a Green Beret, Ranger and paratrooper. I think that I have a good understanding of how military training and life on a military base operates and how the unvaccinated could impact safety and functionality of the troops.
