'West Side Story' dominates Chicago Film Critics Association 2021 nominations with 11

The remake of "West Side Story," which underperformed during its opening weekend, dominated the 2021 Chicago Film Critics Association nominations announced Monday.

Steven Spielberg's remake of the 1961 Jerome Robbins-Robert Wise classic led all other eligible films earning 11 nominations for best picture, director, actors Mike Faist and Ariana DeBose, adapted screenplay, art direction/production design, editing, cinematography, costume design and promising newcomer (DeBose and Rachel Zegler).

Director/adapter Jane Campion's western psychodrama "The Power of the Dog" earned eight nominations for best picture, direction, adapted screenplay, actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Kodi Smit-McPhee, cinematography, editing and score.

"The Green Knight" earned seven nominations followed by "Drive My Car," "Dune" and "Licorice Pizza" with six nods each.

For the first time, the CFCA's most promising performer category consists entirely of women. They include "West Side Story's" DeBose and Zegler, Alana Haim ("Licorice Pizza"), Emilia Jones ("CODA") and Rachel Sennott ("Shiva Baby").

Established in 1990, the CFCA is comprised of representatives from print publications and broadcast outlets. Winners will be announced Dec. 15.
