Gurnee hosting Styrofoam recycling event Saturday

The village of Gurnee is hosting a polystyrene - better known by the brand name Styrofoam - recycling event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at village hall, 325 O'Plaine Road.

Officials said an estimated 30% of landfill space is taken up by polystyrene, which can take over 500 years to breakdown.

The village's partner, Dart Container, will collect the foam to be repurposed into picture frames and other uses.

The event is co-sponsored by state Rep. Joyce Mason.
