Mundelein Fire Dept.receives painting for Sept. 11 memorial
For the 20th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, local artist Shawn Killackey made a painting and auctioned it off at his artist booth in the Mundelein Arts Festival this past September.
He then donated the money earned on that painting to be split between the Mundelein fire and police departments.
"I wanted to be able to use my artwork to help out in our community," Killackey said.
The person with the winning bid on the painting was Sen. Adriane Johnson, and she decided to donate it to the Mundelein Fire Station on Midlothian Road to have it added to their Sept. 11 Memorial in the lobby area.
On Nov. 2, both the senator and Killackey presented the painting to Fire Chief Bill Lark at the fire station.
"To recognize the 20 years passed since the attacks on our country on 9/11, I'm humbled to be with you today to present this painting to Chief Lark and the Mundelein Fire Department," Sen. Johnson said.
"As an addition to the station's memorial, I hope this painting serves as a reminder to the personal sacrifices of the individuals who serve and protect our communities every day."
Killackey signed the back of the painting before giving it to the chief to be hung.
"I am very honored to have one of my pieces of art on display at the fire station," Killackey said. "Thank you, Sen. Johnson, for donating it."
