The Soapbox: Daily Herald editors offer brief thoughts on suburban topics in the news.
Neighbors in Need
Have we mentioned that you can donate at dailyherald.com/neighbors to combat suburban hunger, homelessness and health care disparity? And that the Robert R. McCormick Foundation will add another 50% to the contribution?
Reason for Hope
A devastating condo fire last year that left 18 Rolling Meadows families homeless exposed the need for emergency financial assistance for those who who've suffered a sudden loss. The city's police department is now filling that void with its Hope Fund to provide help for victims of crime or other calamities. Give it some thought, too.
Hail to the state champs
This area is home to two Illinois high school football champions - Wheaton North in 7A and Cary-Grove in 6A. Quite a feat for both programs, and lasting memories for the student athletes. You've made the suburbs proud!
Hail to the best of the best
In Sunday's Daily Herald, we will celebrate the end of the first full high school football season by naming our 2021 All-Area teams and the captains of each of those teams. Sorry, no sneak peeks!
1,000 homicides in Cook County
We've got to get the guns off our streets. And we've got to get the criminals off them too.
Marking a milestone
If you've lived, worked or even just visited Northbrook, it's likely you've been to the downtown institution Sunset Foods. Congratulations go to the friendly, customer service-focused market celebrating its 60th anniversary this week. The Northbrook store is part of a small suburban chain with stores in Highland Park, Lake Forest, Libertyville and Long Grove.
This week's Clippable Quote
"Without imagination, we merely see or hear." - English philosopher Mary Warnock
There's no such thing as bad weather ...
... Only bad clothes, as the saying goes. Many people wouldn't think of exercising outside when it's cold. But if you're dressed appropriately - which many of us in the Midwest know how to do - an afternoon winter walk can be quite invigorating. With the gorgeous sunsets lately, you'll also enjoy a beautiful view. So bundle up and give it a try!
Always good to include bike lanes
Paved bike lanes are among the plans in the spring for 3.6 miles of Deep Lake Road in Lindenhurst and Lake Villa. That means "4-foot bike-friendly shoulders, which currently don't exist out there," a county official said. It's always good to make bike lanes, or at least good shoulders, part of roadwork plans, and they'll be especially nice in that area.
Happy Hanukkah!
It's the seventh night, so to those who celebrate, Chag Urim Sameach! May your candles burn brightly this season.
Time wanted
With the rush of the holiday season upon us, what I think many of us would like this year is more time. Time to spend with family, friends, our pets, doing the things we love, volunteering, exercising, trying something new ... the list goes on. Now is a good time to remember it's OK to say no to an overpacked schedule. Take time for you ... you're worth it.
The sun's artistry
We cannot get enough of the spectacular sunsets that have been painting our suburban skies lately. Breathtaking.
