Palatine American Legion to host breakfast with Santa
The Sons of the American Legion in Palatine are holding a special holiday pancake breakfast with Santa to raise funds for a variety of charities supporting veterans and the community at large.
The breakfast, open to the public, takes place from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at the American Legion Hall, 122 W. Palatine Road.
"We are celebrating the holidays at this pancake breakfast," said John Nemanich, commander of the Sons of the American Legion. "We will be holding our breakfast upstairs in our hall. Santa will be joining us ... (and) children will be able to tell Santa what they want for Christmas and get a picture with Santa."
The all-you-can-eat breakfast will include pancakes, French toast, sausage, ham, scrambled eggs, fruit, orange juice, coffee and milk. The cost is $11 for adults and $5 for children 3 years and older.
The Sons of the American Legion also will be accepting donations for the Palatine Township Food Pantry. For a donation of a canned or dry good, people can receive a dollar off their breakfast.
The breakfast is a very popular event among the community, American Legion member Bill Pohlman said.
The American Legion and its various groups, including the Sons of the American Legion, support and engage in many charitable activities, such as visiting and bringing items to patients at Veterans Affairs hospitals, and offering a Thanksgiving dinner to members of Naval Station Great Lakes and bingo for vision-impaired veterans, he said.
"There is also a slew of different things we give money to, and we do things in the community," he said.
A special thing happening now is the creation of a memorial, Nemanich said.
"The American Legion is creating a memorial and allowing individuals to honor their relatives for their service in the military or family members with a commemorative brick engraved with their name and, if applicable, details of their service," Nemanich said.
"The bricks will be part of a perpetual display with our newly renovated cannon."

The Sons of the American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization within the American Legion. It is made up of boys and men of all ages whose parents or grandparent served in the U.S. military and became eligible for membership in the American Legion. There are currently 300,000 members in the United States and abroad.
The Palatine chapter holds its monthly general meeting at 10:30 a.m. the first Saturday of the month at the American Legion Hall in Palatine.
