Woman, 2 kids die when train strikes vehicle at crossing
GARY, Ind. (AP) - Two young girls and a woman died after being ejected from their vehicle after it was struck Tuesday morning in Gary, authorities said.
Deyki Mitchell, 13, and Deniya Brown, 11, died in the crash, as did Shermika Herbert, 37, Lake County Coroner Merrilee Frey said. All were from Gary, The (Northwest Indiana) Times reported.
Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said the victims were family.
'œWe all are saddened when we lose any of our friends and neighbors, but it's especially painful when we lose multiple members of a family, including young ones,'ť Prince said. 'œWe lost several members of a family in a train-car collision this morning.'ť
The crash occurred about 7:30 a.m., Gary police Cmdr. Jack Hamady said.
