Fast does not always equate with best

The current method of hand delivering election results in DuPage County is the most secure. It is not unreasonable to have to wait mere hours after the polls close to have accurate and reliable election results.

Prior to the internet, people waited to read results in the paper the next day. Demanding election results immediately after polls close is a dangerous precedent that also leads to rumors - especially in close races where mail-in ballots postmarked the day of the election have not yet been delivered and provisional ballots have not had a chance to be cured.

When I took journalism in high school, I was taught the "why" behind a story is extremely important. Perhaps the Daily Herald should focus more on why immediate results aren't the best idea.

Yes, the editorial does briefly explain why the current process is not the speediest; but it is immediately followed up with the suggestion that the current process can start dangerous rumors.

The Daily Herald should use their position to dispel dangerous rumors and doubts by actually explaining the process, a process that any U.S. citizen over the age of 18 can participate in - a process that the Daily Herald could send reporters to observe, including driving along with judges as they deliver data cards.

In an age of cyber security issues, the fact that DuPage does not electronically transmit results is seen as a good thing by many residents of DuPage County.

Ultimately all elections are run at the county level by our friends and neighbors. One of the best ways to really understand elections is something I did long ago and never looked back: become an election judge.
