Bensenville has a smashing good time at pumpkin recycling event

In partnership with SCARCE, the Village of Bensenville hosted a Pumpkin Smash recycling event on Saturday, Nov. 6. The event took place from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot behind village hall.

This one-day event provided the community with a great opportunity for families to properly dispose of their Halloween pumpkins while having a little fun doing it.

During the event, families had the option to smash their pumpkin with custom-made sledgehammers by the Bensenville Public Works Department or simply chuck their pumpkin into a dumpster.

Smash events like this help keep pumpkins out of landfills by diverting them to compost facilities and thereby reducing the amount of harmful greenhouse gas being released into the environment.

"This event provides the perfect opportunity for Bensenville families to have a little fun while also helping the environment. We're always looking to expand our environmentally friendly initiatives and this is a very fun way to achieve that goal," said Village President Frank DeSimone.
