Village of Lombard to host Veterans Day ceremony Nov. 11

All are invited to honor our military veterans by attending the 2021 Veterans Day ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Sunken Garden in Lombard Common Park, Grace and Maple streets. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.

Lombard Village President Keith Giagnorio will welcome attendees, and Pastor Jill Terpstra from First Church of Lombard will open the ceremony with an invocation. The keynote speaker will be Lombard resident and Vietnam War veteran Dennis Jensen. He served the U.S. Navy from 1965-73. Currently, he serves as Commander for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lilac Post 5815.

Glenbard East High School student Jayda Swapsy will perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America." Taps will be played by Glenbard East buglers TJ Villasenor and Allison Schmuldt.

In an effort to remember the outstanding courage and commitment to freedom made by our veterans, Village President Giagnorio invites all residents, scout troops and families to attend. Residents interested in sitting during the short ceremony are invited to bring lawn chairs.

The event is organized by Lilac VFW Post 5815 and the Village of Lombard.

The Village of Lombard also is hosting its annual fall blood drive on Wednesday, Nov. 10 in honor of Veterans Day. This event also recognizes the former Village President Bill Mueller, who passed away in 2012. Residents are encouraged to donate blood in honor of Mueller's dedication to Lombard's veterans. All donors will receive a $15 e-gift card that can be used at a variety of stores.

The blood drive will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the mobile coach parked on the lower level of Yorktown Center outside of Von Maur, and from 1:30 to 7 p.m. at First Church of Lombard, 220 S. Main St.

Mueller was a lifelong servant to the village and this blood drive honors his passion for giving back to community members, including Lombard's veterans.
