Chicago man charged in Downers Grove carjacking attempt
Bail has been set at $500,000 for a Chicago man accused of trying to carjack a woman last month at a Downers Grove gasoline station.
Demario L. Butler, 30, of the 4300 block of West Maypole Avenue, appeared Sunday in DuPage County bond court.
He is charged with one count of attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, and one count of armed robbery with a firearm.
Around 1:19 p.m. on Sept. 30, a woman reported she had been robbed by two people at a BP station at Main Street and Ogden Avenue, authorities said.
The woman told police two people approached her - Butler on the driver's side of her vehicle, the second person on the passenger side.
Butler held a black handgun next to his face, with the barrel pointing up, and demanded the victim's car keys and cellphone, authorities said.
The woman gave him her phone and ran toward the station's store. Butler got into the car but was unable to start it. He got out and began walking toward the woman. But he then ran toward Ogden, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney's office.
He was arrested Friday.
To be released before trial, Butler would need to post $50,000 bond. He would also have to wear a GPS monitor.
