Teen charged with attempted murder in Elgin shooting

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder in a Sunday morning shooting in Elgin.

The defendant also is charged with aggravated battery-discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office.

The defendant fired several shots from a handgun, hitting another juvenile four times, according to the news release. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. near Chicago and Geneva streets.

Authorities did not name the suspect, citing the person's age.

However, the Kane County circuit court clerk's court records site lists the defendant as a Julian Zamudio.

The case was automatically transferred to adult court because of the aggravated battery charge. State law dictates that when a person 16 or older is charged with shooting a gun, he or she be charged as an adult.

Bail was set Monday at $500,000, and the suspect would need to post $50,000 to be freed pretrial.

The youth's next court appearance is on Oct. 15.

Elgin police are still investigating the case. They ask anyone with information to call (847) 289-2600.
