Elgin police still investigating fatal bike crash on Randall Road

Elgin police say they still don't know why a bicyclist swerved into a moving vehicle on Randall Road Wednesday, resulting in his death.

Police officers responded around 11:49 a.m. to Randall and Big Timber Road. Witnesses told them a vehicle was driving south on Randall in the left lane when the cyclist, who was riding in the right lane near the curb, moved into the left lane and made contact with the front passenger door of a vehicle, resulting in a crash.

The 60-year-old cyclist, who wasn't wearing a helmet, was taken to nearby Advocate Sherman Hospital where he died from his injuries. The 24-year-old driver of the involved vehicle was not hurt.

Kevin Senne, the Elgin Police Department's acting public information officer, said investigators are still doing follow-up interviews. However, he said, "we may never figure out exactly why" the man drifted over.

Senne also said there were no immediate signs of drug or alcohol impairment in the bicyclist or the car's driver.

The Kane County coroner's office and Sheriff Ron Hain said an autopsy was being performed Friday but the results and the man's identity wouldn't be released until likely midday Saturday. Toxicology results will take longer.

No charges or tickets have been issued.

Anyone who has information about the crash is asked to call the police department's traffic unit at (847) 289-2661 or send a text to 847-411, including ELGINPD at the beginning of the message.
