Batavia Public Library to host Sept. 19 reception for 'Library Leader'

On Sunday, Sept. 19, Batavia Public Library will host a reception to recognize Batavia resident Jo Ann Smith as a "Library Leader" at 2 p.m. in the library's Founders Room, 10 S. Batavia Ave. The public is invited.

Smith was named a "Library Leader" at the library board's June meeting.

In the time of coronavirus, Smith, as president of the board of library trustees, was a thoughtful, forward-looking, and effective coach, counselor, and leader for the trustees and library director, as the library successfully navigated the uncharted waters of a worldwide pandemic.

During Smith's involvement with the Friends of the Batavia Public Library, she served as publicity chair (2005-2006), vice president (2006-2008, 2011-2013), and president. During her tenure as vice president, the Friends board developed and opened the book sale areas known as the FriendSpace (on the lower level) and the expanded Book Sale Corner (near the checkout desk.)

Smith served as an active member of the Speak Up! Community Engagement sessions, the purpose of which was to research opportunities for the library to improve its services and develop a set of goals for the board's consideration. And in 2018, Smith took on the challenge of informing voters to continue the community's financial support of the library through passing a successful zero tax rate change referendum.

The "Library Leader" program was established in 2002 to honor persons who have made outstanding contributions to the Batavia Public Library District.

Nominations for "Library Leader" are accepted annually between July 1 and Dec. 31. Criteria and application forms are available at the library.

The reception will include a short program and refreshments. Registration is not required. For more information, call George H. Scheetz, (630) 879-1393, ext. 350.
