Mundelein Seminary to honor former rector at golf outing, award dinner
Mundelein Seminary will host the 30th Annual Rector's Classic Golf and Dinner event on Thursday, Sept. 23, honoring Most Reverend John R. Gorman, a 1952 Mundelein alumnus who also served as rector of the seminary from 1966-73.
Bishop Gorman, the most senior auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Chicago, will receive the 2021 Cardinal Bernardin "In Service of One Another" Catholic Humanitarian Award. Funds raised from the event support the formation of future parish priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago and nearly 30 other dioceses served by Mundelein Seminary.
"As we celebrate Mundelein Seminary's centennial this year, it is fitting to honor Bishop Gorman for his transformational leadership of the seminary through the changes of Vatican II," said Father John Kartje, rector of Mundelein Seminary.
"His service to the local Church in Chicago as a pastor, auxiliary bishop and vicar general has impacted countless lives and serves as a model of what effective priestly ministry looks like for our current seminarians."
Golfers will tee off in a scramble format at the historic Pine Meadow Golf Club, enjoying opportunities to get to know the seminarians who staff the event, as well as lunch and a TaylorMade gift bag. Golf contests include two "Beat the Seminarian" rounds and a hole-in-one competition.
A reception and dinner will follow beginning at 6 p.m. on the Mundelein Seminary campus. The event will include a silent auction, raffle and the award presentation.
