Addressing gunfire 'a priority' after 39th incident this year, Elgin chief says

Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley said addressing gunfire is "a priority for us" after the city logged its 39th incident this year and the seventh time someone actually has been shot.

The latest shooting occurred just after 4 p.m. on Tuesday on the 800 block of Jefferson Avenue. When police arrived, they discovered a man with a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening.

Lalley, during her weekly radio show Friday, said the man is out of the hospital and recovering. Police are investigating the shooting but have not yet made any arrests.

Police believe the shooting was not random, Lalley said, and there were precipitating events that led to it.

"It's important to keep the community involved and talking about where are people getting guns, and why are people shooting up in the air," Lalley said. "It's a priority for us. We are not happy with it, and we will continue to do everything we can."
