Palatine's Second City Canine Rescue hopes to score a touchdown with Tailgate for Tails fundraiser

Football and fundraising make a winning combination during Second City Canine Rescue's Tailgate for Tails event.

Bear down and help some pooches Sunday, Sept. 19, at Durty Nellie's in Palatine. Proceeds from the event benefit the shelter, which is at 570 N. Smith St. in Palatine.

According to its website, the shelter has found 4,316 dogs their forever homes since 2011, with 325 adopted in 2021.

The shelter, which is mostly run by volunteers, takes in dogs from overpopulated or underresourced shelters. According to the group's website, once the animals are rescued they are taken to the vet for any health issues and then spayed and neutered. All dogs are temperament tested before they are deemed suitable for adoption.

Once their vet visit is over, the animals are then fostered out for two weeks so that the shelter can determine their likes and dislikes, which allows shelter staff to place the pups with the right families.

While the dogs are all fostered and don't live in the Palatine facility, it offers a comfortable, stress-free atmosphere for pooches and potential adopters to meet.

According to Jeffrey Fritz, part of the marketing team for Second City Canine Rescue, if you are interested in adopting a new family member, head to the website, www.sccrescue.org, to view photos and bios of adoptable dogs.

If you find the perfect one, send an online application and then attend one of the shelter's weekly adoption events. Some of the dogs are available during the week, as well as at the adoption center in Palatine. Once you apply, the shelter will set up a time to meet the dog. Meetings are by appointment only.

Proceeds from events like Tailgate for Tails help with treatments, surgeries, food, transportation and more.

Fritz discusses the upcoming event and how you can help.

Q: What is Second City Canine Rescue? Give a brief overview of what the organization does and who you serve.

A: Second City Canine Rescue is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to rescue homeless animals and responsibly place them into permanent, loving homes.

We help dogs both locally as well as in the Southern states, where the euthanasia rates are typically much higher. We do not discriminate - all breeds, ages, sizes, and colors are welcomed and loved.

Q: Where do the majority of your donations come from?

A: Most of our donations come from people like you! Individual donors make up the bulk of our donations. We also receive corporate sponsorships, host fundraising events, and obtain grants to help us further our mission of rescuing responsibly.

Q: What else would you like readers to know?

A: We are participating in the Michelson Found Animals Saving Pets Challenge throughout September, competing against other organizations across the country for additional grant money to save even more lives!

Each year the foundation offers a fundraising challenge to animal welfare organizations, which involves each organization creating a peer-to-peer fundraiser where volunteers and supporters individually raise money via their family, friends, donors and followers during a four-week period.

There are various opportunities each week to compete for additional money from the foundation. This is one of our largest fundraisers every year in addition to our Cocktails for Canines gala.
