Multiple people fired shots at party where SIU student died

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Police investigating a weekend shooting that killed a Southern Illinois University freshman as she was attending a house party have determined that more than one person fired shots.

Multiple people fired shots about 3 a.m. Sunday during the party near the SIU campus, Carbondale police said Monday. Keeshanna Jackson, 18, was pronounced dead at a hospital from her wounds.

Three other people - a 29-year-old from Marion, a 23-year-old from Murphysboro, and a juvenile victim from Marion - were wounded but survived after arriving at a hospital on their own, police said.

Jackson County State's Attorney Joe Cervantez urged anyone who attended the house party or has information about the shooting to pass that onto police, saying that law enforcement officials have so received little cooperation in their investigation.

He told The Southern Illinoisan that the public needs to speak up if they know something about the shooting.

'œThe problem is, is that when something like this happens, we get dozens of calls to 911 for police to come and you know intervene and protect them. But yeah, once they get there, they're met with resistance,'ť Cervantez said.
