Fans were betrayed
From my first Cubs game at Wrigley Field in 1945 watching Phil Cavarretta and Stan Hack in the infield and "Peanuts" Lowery, Andy Pafko and Bill Nicholson in the outfield, left to right from my bleacher seat, I have cheered on the Chicago Cubs.
Even from the lean years when I would shout my loudest from behind the home dugout "Back up the truck" to our glorious 2016 championship team.
That team, with all its potential for a long run, has been decimated by an ownership that decided they had done their job and they now deserved to "cash in" on the benefits, essentially emptying the pocketbooks of loyal fans, thinking that we can wait another 100 years for another championship team. Trading our best pitcher, Yu Darvish, was the last straw and clearly indicated to fans and players alike that it was all over.
Who can blame the players any more than the fans for a serious letdown and thus a lackadaisical year without adequate starting pitchers, save one. The players were betrayed. The fans were betrayed. The city was betrayed.
I am too old to watch another rebuild, so I think it's finally time to become a White Sox fan. Did I really say that?
