Juneteenth celebration is premature

The celebration of Juneteenth is premature. We should celebrate only when everyone is treated equally and fairly.

When in some states the vote of legitimate voters is being restricted; children cannot learn all the history of this country and the reason for one of its holidays; not everyone has an equal opportunity for a good education, health care, job, housing and fairness in the criminal justice system - how can we celebrate?

Rather than rushing through an easy, feel-good and politically motivated sop to African-Americans, Congress should: pass HR40 setting up a commission to study and make proposals for reparations; pass the Police Accountability Act of 2020; and ensure that the voting rights of people are respected and enforced. Only then will there be a true Emancipation Day for all.
