Marisnick, Heyward will begin rehab assignments for Cubs

Cubs manager David Ross said injured outfielders Jake Marisnick and Jason Heyward will be joining the Iowa Cubs on Wednesday to begin rehab assignments. Ross is hopeful both players can join the Cubs' active roster during a four-game series this weekend in San Francisco.

Both Marisnick and Heyward are out with hamstring strains. Marisnick went on the injured list May 11 and Heyward on May 20.

It's been an injury-filled May for the Cubs, even while they posted a 19-8 record. Anthony Rizzo was back in the starting lineup Tuesday against San Diego after missing six games with a sore back.

The Cubs' injured list is a crowded document. Pitchers Alec Mills and Trevor Megill already began rehab assignments in Iowa. Trevor Williams is recovering from an appendectomy and David Bote from a dislocated left shoulder. Ross said Matt Duffy, out with a back injury, has been taking light swings off the tee, but hasn't taken ground balls yet. Nico Hoerner and Justin Steele also have hamstring strains.

"Things progressing well on Nico, had a good day yesterday," Ross said. "Justin Steele is doing great, threw a little 10-pitch touch-and-feel off the mound and felt great."

The Cubs made some minor league transactions Tuesday. Brennen Davis, the team's top-rated position prospect, is one of five players moving from Single A South Bend to the Double A Tennessee Smokies.

This will be Davis' first time in Double A. The 21-year-old outfielder hit .321 with 2 homes run in South Bend this season.
