Thank you, young people, for getting vaccine

I wanted to express my deep gratitude to the 12- to 15-year-olds, and their parents, who stepped up and received the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it was permitted.

These children have received a valuable lesson in civics.

They understand that they are at low risk of the life-threatening complications of COVID-19 infection but as a member of society, they realized their role is not only to think of themselves but to think of others.

By getting that vaccine, they lessen the risk that they become infected and transmit infection to others who are more susceptible and at higher risk of death.

They listened to the public health officials whose only job is to protect the health of all the public and agreed that the vaccine was well-tested and safe instead of believing the many on social media who overnight became "experts" in vaccine safety and viral transmission and spread false information.

They also help society get one step closer to normality by making returning to school and social activities safer for everyone. Those adults who continue to refuse to get vaccinated because they are low risk or don't trust the scientists should take a moment and reflect on the wisdom of our children.
